The Jules Cavaillès Research Center has amassed and organised an exhaustive archive on Jules Cavaillès and his work.
The archive contains artworks, books, photographs, films, letters, and publications and is a resource for curators and scholars but it is not open to the general public.

Painters of the Poetic Reality

Jules Cavaillès (1901-1977) together with Maurice Brianchon (1899-1979)André Planson (1898-1981)Christian Caillard (1899-1985), Roger Limouse (1894-1990)Raymond Legueult (1898-1971)Roland Oudot (1897-1981) and Kostia Terechkovitch (1902-1978) formed the group known as ‘Painters of the Poetic Reality’ (La rèalitè poètique).

 

Talented post-Impressionist

Jules Cavaillès was a well known and talented painter – and very versatile: he worked in oils, gouache and pastel, and his subject matter featured figures, portraits, nudes, still-lifes, flowers, landscapes and animals.
His work is represented in many leading collections and museums, including the Modern Art Museum in Paris, and the museums in Toulouse, Albi, Marseilles, Chicago and Helsinki.

 

Reflecting a leisurely way of life

He composed and recomposed this selected reality at leisure, presenting it through objects gleaned like repositories of memories, and he infused his art with life thanks to pure colours stroked by a soft light. The decorations of his interiors are a reflection of childhood memories, imbued with a distinctive provincial Napoleon 111 character. These interiors are still marked by a kind of maternal warmth, an invitation to adopt an unhurried approach. His paintings of open windows are like a breath of fresh air; they are an open stage, reflecting a leisurely way of life, and create a mood of contemplation. Despite his delicate and lyrical touch, Jules Cavaillès manages to convey his tremendous lust for life in his paintings. Cavaillès always retained his independent stance, his enthusiastic take on life and his sensitive attitude. He would devise innovative colour harmonies and develop unusual tonal relationships to demonstrate that in spite of all the technical constraints, his paintings revealed the vitality of his vision, reaching out to the poetic dimension of the object.   Read more >>
